Winning - The Random Sunday Nonsense Series 3

How important is winning to you?

It used to be everything for me until a couple of years ago. I had to win..and as far as I remember I mostly did too. But somewhere down the line I realized something strange..

Knowing that you can win is as good as winning itself. Sometimes you dont really need to beat someone, or come on top of everyone else. But you can quietly let someone else win, see their smile, and yet, enjoy the victory yourself.

Of course, there are still moments when your soul doesn't give you any points for second place. But beyond those moments, you realize the shortness of life. The all important message is to live the life, and not worry too much about the end. Because we do not know when or where the end will be.

I remember a painting in my old house.. Of a boat in the sea..with just the sun in the background.. Below it was a note "Go as far as you can see..when you get there, you will be able to see further.."

Good night folks..

two things:

1. How sure are you that you would have won?? without certain proof, which does not come without winning, am I allowed to use the phrase "...let someone else win..."

2. As Shakespeare said,
"Where is the horse that doth untread again
His tedious measures with the unbated fire
That he did pace them first?"

... all the fun lies in the chase, methinks!!!

Nice one bro. A very valid point. If the parents who force their kids to come first in everything they do realized the danger in that attitude, then a lot of kids would be able to enjoy their childhood.

Also letting someone else win, when you could have easily won, is better than winning; at least in many cases.

I was watching the movie Cars, where a hotshot racing car who believed that winning was everything realizing otherwise. Beautiful movie...

Winning is not everything; there are many other important things in life.

And the last quote is just great.

a good thought ! When I read ur post Iw as immediately reminded of our childhood ..because that is when we are clueless about life and try to figure it out for the first time ..I remember the pride I took in being called a good girl ...or getting the best marks .And I realised that it was true for everyone .We all take pride in what is considered good or a winner .Its an inherent trait to want to win .
But when we try to win most of the times we seek appreciation from others around us ..and it feeds our ego to be on the top . But we need to learn to win because we want to contribute our best to whatever we do . Knowing we can win is as good as winning is very true . Reminded me of the pandavas and the kaurvas - one knew they could win anytime yet they never wanted to , one went to the extend of fighting their own kin to win .

@ everyone - i guess there was some problem with blogger and hence even i couldnt post a comment until today! sorry about that!

@ faceless - winning need not be always physical..it can be mental, moral and probably a lot of other things as well.

nice quote from shakespeare..definitely agree there are times when we need that horse :)

all the fun lies in the chase..that i absolutely agree.

@ alexis - long time al..was wondering if everythings ok with you.

i havent watched the Cars yet..will do.

@ shruti - thats a very nice take..

one of the backdrops of my post was this: we need not win to have that feeling of victory..but yet, we always need to put in our best and a great effort or fight..only then can we reach the point where we can feel we can win. at that point we are able to either still win..or let someone else win.

ahh...its a sunday...forgive me if it sounds like nonsense :)

Before i used to play chess for fun!

But now I play to win..thats the difference over a period of time!

Ofcourse it matters with whom I am playing ..not just playing with novice and win..thats No win at all!

I was taught that, in life sometimes you win, sometimes you lose and it doesn't matter.

What matters is that you didn't lose yourself, while trying to win!
